Find the Best Liability Insurance (Umbrella)

Finding the best umbrella insurance coverage for your needs can be difficult. Whether you’re looking for the cheapest premiums, the best customer service or just great basic coverage, NerdWallet has you covered.

Liability insurance is important for consumers who want extra, overarching and complete coverage and protection. It covers the assets and future earnings of the policy holder, in addition to any other policies that individual may own.

Liability insurance is typically sold in increments of $1 million, and provides broad liability coverage above and beyond home or auto policies. It effectively fills in the gaps of any policies that it’s held in conjunction with. Umbrella insurance could also provide coverage for claims, such as libel, false arrest, slander and invasion of privacy, that are not covered by other plans.

USAA: Best for military members

USAA liability insurance offers many unique benefits for policyholders. It gives you coverage for excessive medical costs from accidents, home injuries and even legal costs. Customers continue to give high praise for the plans, the excellent premium rates and USAA’s customer service.

State Farm: Best rated

Liability insurance from State Farm helps protect you from several things: Your business is safe from lawsuits and your home from a guest who slips and falls at your party, allowing you to breathe a little easier. However, some customers have reported claims not being handled the way they were promised and agents not being up to par. State Farm has a wide range of options but only ranks average among competitors.

Geico: Best basic coverage

Geico has the standard array of liability coverage available for property, legal costs, medical payments and professional mistakes. Its main selling point is that it is among the cheapest options for getting adequate coverage. Customer reviews generally give favorable ratings, with many stating “you get your money’s worth.” Go with Geico for the savings, but don’t expect all the bells ad whistles you can find with policies elsewhere.

Allstate: Best for customer satisfaction

Allstate offers liability coverage for bodily injury, property damage and other professional-related costs. Customers have complained that added charges show up without any formal explanation and customer service is nothing special.

Travelers: Good basic coverage

Travelers offers liability coverage for your home and business. There is a minimum coverage amount of $1,000 per person included in your plan and a maximum coverage amount of $500,000. Customers have complained that they were unfairly charged for things that they had not agreed to, and there have been additional complaints involving the claims service.
